A year ago, we inducted the 2009-2011 Sets of Officers and formalized the BIBAK HI Youth Group. This year, we have committed to several public presentations including the March 14 Honolulu Festival Parade and March 20 Leeward Community College International Culture Day.

Let's celebrate these blessings and come to the monthly BIBAK Hawaii gathering. This month, the gathering will be on February 27, 5 to 11 pm at the Hale Moku Community Center. It is a February Gathering and therefore a Valentines' gathering, too. POTLUCK as usual so bring your favorite dishes!. This year's February gathering is coordinated by Jean "Juana" Eslava. BIBAK HAWAII OHANA will celebrate the Holiday Season on December 26th at the Hale Moku Community Center (SEE BELOW FOR DRIVING DIRECTIONS). It will be potluck as usual and the organization will treat us with lechon, roast beef and drinks.

Be there by 5 pm for registration and family photo session, 6 pm for BIBAK members group photo and dinner, and 7 pm for the program. We hope everyone will help clean up at 10 pm.

This year's Holiday gathering is coordinated by a team led by Helen Longao.
Dress code: Christmas festive and/or Igorot inspired.

Hale Moku/Hokulani Community Center
by Central Drive Near Nimitz Entrance of the Pearl Harbor Naval Station

From Honolulu
1. Proceed in the Ewa direction (that's westbound to the non-natives) and take the Airport/Hickam AFB/Pearl Harbor Exit 19A to the H-1 Airport Viaduct.
2. Proceed on the Viaduct to Exit 15A, right after the Hickam AFB/Pearl Harbor off ramp.
3. When exiting at Exit 15A, stay in you left lane and turn at the FIRST traffic signal (you'll be cutting accross several lanes to get to the left) at CENTER STREET, then take the first left onto MAIN STREET. The commmunity center is located at the end of MAIN STREET, approximately 100 yards on the left.

From Ewa-side
1. Get onto Kam Highway after passing Pearl Ridge Shopping Center.
2. Proceed on Kam Hwy until you see "Makalapa Gate". The CENTER STREET intersection will be on the right side immediately AFTER the Makalapa gate intersection.
3. From CENTER STREET, take the first left onto MAIN STREET. Proceed approximately 100 yards. The Community Center will be on the left.

KEY TO SUCCESS FOR BIBAK-HAWAII

On July 16, 1994, BIBAK-Hawaii joined for the first time the 2nd annual Filipino Fiesta and 1st parade which was hosted by the FILCOM Center. BIBAK-Hawaii was judged First Place Winner for the Best Marching Unit. This was one of the accomplishments the organization achieved in 1994. Despite the fact that the invitation was received in the middle of the preparation for the cultural presentation “Reclaiming a Heritage” (which was sponsored by the University of Hawaii at the Leeward Community College in July 1994) the members of the BIBAK Hawaii decided to join the Parade just two weeks before the occasion.

Teamwork, positive attitude, and a pride to share the culture of the Mountain Provinces were the keys to the BIBAK-Hawaii success in winning the first place trophy for Best Marching Unit. Needless to say, the group is participating again this year. Participation in the parade has increased its membership.

Not quite a canao but it will be a nostalgic gathering and reunion of sorts if members and friends from the last 30 years will come to BIBAK Hawaii's 30th anniversary. The special gathering will be on November 28, 2009, 6 to 11 pm, Ohana Honolulu Airport Hotel. Active members and officers of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s should not miss this one BIBAK Hawaii event.

17th Annual Filipino Fiesta at Kapiolani Park

Did you have a good time at the fiesta? There was much to savor- there was food for the stomach, food for the spirit, and food for the brain. There was camaraderie and reunions among friends-new and old alike.

BIBAK Hawaii members and friends at the Cordillera Region booth. The BIBAK youth learn how to play the pakkong from their manong/uncle Bernard while some of the old folks got engaged in an academic discussion on Filipino issues.

East West Center International Fair Snapshots

The two BIBAK youth members who found time to be at the annual EWC international fair were not short on enthusiasm and energy. They saw their own BIBAK auntie Desiree and uncles Wayland and Bernard play Kolintang music. They also say their auntie Desiree perform Kolintang and Balinese dances. The afternoon was an eclectic mix of performances and culture exhibit booths by East West Center scholars and their friends. The snapshots capture costumes and offerings of students from Taiwan, Malaysia, East Timor, Bhutan, and Vietnam. The Japanese garden was a good place for playground wrestling.

May 9 Fiesta and Parade Just Around the Corner

April 12, Sand Island State Recreational Park- President Hugo Prill announced that BIBAK Hawaii was invited to join the May 9 Filipino Fiesta and Parade. This is the Filipino Community's largest annual event in Hawaii. BIBAK Hawaii will be participating in the parade, stage performance, and cultural village booth. Virgil Apostol and Grace Prill are coordinating this year's participation.

Everyone especially those performing and marching are asked to please attend three prep and practices-April 25, April 26 and May 3. All three will run from 1-4 pm at Lani's Kitchen near the front of the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu.

Before the day ended, a full rainbow appeared as if to remind all of spiritual renewal and the Creator's wonderful ways...

The other photos are coming...That is, we hope the BIBAK moms and dads who took snapshots will start emailing some to bibakhawaii@gmail.com. BIBAK Easter gatherings have always been ones for the children and the 2009 celebration was no different. It was well-attended especially by children ages 3 to 15!

The BIBAK youth officers enjoyed putting together the activities for all--easter egg painting, easter egg hunt, easter egg in water, and baseball. BIBAK parents, uncles, aunties and grandparents were wonderful supporters.

BIBAK Youth 2009 Spring Break Hike

April 4, Aiea Trail Loop aka Keaiwa Heiau State Park.

The BIBAK Hawaii youth decided to hike and had a blast exploring nature, learning sakuting, leaving time capsule notes, eating together, planning April 12 Easter activities, and discovering more about a Hawaiian sacred place called heiau.

If you missed this hike, do not worry. Expect more hikes and other activities by and for the youth.

For this hike, mahalo goes to some of the BIBAK Hawaii adult members especially Jeff (hike master), Virgil (instructor), Linda and Daniel (drivers), and Carolyn (follow-ups).

March 8- To the delight of oldtime BIBAK Hawaii members, Virgie and Marvin Espadero were able to swing by Lani's Kitchen to say hello. The Espadero family were active BIBAK Hawaii members in the mid-1990s. They now live in Canada where they continue to be active BIBAK members and performing artists. Marvin and Virgie specialize in the Isneg dances of Apayao. Marvin is remembered also for the critical role he plays in providing the sounds for Bendian and Tayao performances.

This year's parade is on March 15, Sunday 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

As in the past year, the Honolulu Festival organizers will offer parking at Saratoga and or Paki parking (end of parade).There will be shuttle service from the Paki parking area to the parade starting. The parade is on Sunday March 15, 2009 starting from 16:30, and participants meet at Fort DeRussey as usual except we will begin the parade from Lewers Street. It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest aloha and best wishes to everyone. Congratulations to the 2009-2010 BIBAK Hawaii Officers.

BIBAK Hawaii was founded in 1979. Our rich culture, beliefs and traditions are treasures that we share with our friends and community. Our objectives are to promote fellowship and unity among ourselves, provide assistance and morale support to each other, and promote and preserve the cultural heritage of our ancestors. We will continue to participate and support events that promote our culture through workshops, exhibits, trade booths, etc.

I commend the Outgoing 2007-2008 Officers whose leadership and unselfish efforts enabled BIBAK HI to fulfill our objectives. My best wishes to the Incoming officers who will continue to lead BIBAK HI to meet our goals. Mahalo to all the members whose support and participation made our organization strong and successful.

It is a great honor and privilege to be given this opportunity to reach out to our kailians in the beautiful paradise islands of Hawaii.

On behalf of the Igorot Global Organization (“IGO”), my greetings and congratulations to your organization on this special occasion, induction of the new presidents and the officers of your organization. It is great also that the youths are getting organized. Groom them well, they are your promising future leaders.

It has been said and proven that the effectiveness or success of the organization is through the active involvement of its officers and members.

May I take this opportune time to announce future activities in the Igorot world. Together with the activities of each BIBAK or IGOROT organizations all over the world, are the larger BIBAK communities, The Igorot Consultation of BIMAAK Europe (“ICBE”) on April 2009 and then the 8th IGO Igorot International Consultation (“IIC”) in Vancouver in Summer of 2010, with my hope of some participation coming from your BIBAK Hawaii.

Tribute to Vicente Sonson by Angel Galas

July 1993, going through the gates of Public Works Center (PWC) in Pearl Harbor as a mail clerk, I observed the name tag “Sonson” on the security guard. I remembered a “Sonson Sr.” in the 1930s who captivated me because he spoke like a Sagada Igorot. I met a Mariano Sonson at the Kalihi Wesley Center with the Saranay Club. In the 1980s, I got interested in learning to play the gongs also at a Sonson’s house in Waipahu.

At first when I passed through the PWC gate and Vicente Sonson was on duty, he’d always say “Ah, native Igorot..”, We’d talk stories until a car gets behind me signaling the arrival of Aurie. Friendship developed and as a yardman, Vic as I called him then hired me to do work for him. One time when I asked him to help me catch a rooster by the road infront of his house, we were so close to cornering the rooster when three teenagers passed by and grabbed it. As they walked away patting the rooster, Vic said, “Angel there goes your pinikpikan.”

Vic was not ashame to identify with BIBAK. He brought his family and friends to BIBAK and now they are among the most active members. He’ll be missed and yours truly will remember that he was one truly jolly good fellow!

BIBAK Hawaii would like to express our deepest sympathy and condolence to Aurie Sonson and Family.

Vic Sonson's funeral will be on Friday, January 30, 2009.
Viewing will be from 0900 to 1100 AM at Holy Family Church.
Mass will be at 1130 and after the mass will be burial at 1:00 pm in Kaneohe at the Hawaiian Veterans Memorial Park.

by Central Drive Near Nimitz Entrance of the Pearl Harbor Naval Station

HOW TO GET THERE....
From Honolulu
1. Proceed in the Ewa direction (that's westbound to the non-natives) and take the Airport/Hickam AFB/Pearl Harbor Exit 19A to the H-1 Airport Viaduct.
2. Proceed on the Viaduct to Exit 15A, right after the Hickam AFB/Pearl Harbor off ramp.
3. When exiting at Exit 15A, stay in you left lan and turn at the FIRST traffic signal (you'll be cutting accross several lanes to get to the left) at CENTER STREET, then take the first left onto MAIN STREET. The commmunity center is located at the end of MAIN STREET, approximately 100 yards on the left.

From Ewa-side
1. Get onto Kam Highway after passing Pearl Ridge Shopping Center.
2. Proceed on Kam Hwy until you see "Makalapa Gate". The CENTER STREET intersection will be on the right side immediately AFTER the Makalapa gate intersection.
3. From CENTER STREET, take the first left onto MAIN STREET. Proceed approximately 100 yards. The Community Center will be on the left.
